"Surround Them With Books"
As television turns our society into an increasingly image-dominated culture, Christians must continue to be people of the Word. When we read, we cultivate a sustained attention span, an active imagination, a capacity for logical analysis and critical thinking, and a rich inner life. Each of these qualities, which have proven themselves essential to a free people, is under assault in our TV-dominated culture. Christians, to maintain their Word-centered perspective in an image-driven world, must become readers.
Postman explores the differences between the mental processes involved in reading and those involved in television watching. Reading demands sustained concentration, whereas television promotes a very short attention span. Reading involves (and teaches) logical reasoning, whereas television involves (and teaches) purely emotional responses. Reading promotes continuity, the gradual accumulation of knowledge, and sustained exploration of ideas. Television, on the other hand, fosters fragmentation, anti-intellectualism, and immediate gratification.
As evangelicals, we too are tempted to conform to the world rather than to the Word, just as the children of Israel were tempted by their neighbors’ graven images and the thought-forms these embodied. We too often stress feeling rather than truth. We tend to seek emotional religious experiences rather than the cross of Jesus Christ. Because we expect worldly “blessings,” we do not know how to endure suffering. We want to “name it and claim it”—instantly—rather than submit ourselves without reservation to the will of God. We are impatient with theology, and we dismiss history, thus disdaining the faith of our brothers and sisters who have gone before us and neglecting what they could teach us. We want entertaining worship services—on the order of a good TV show—rather than worship that focuses on the holiness of God and His Word. We want God to speak to us in visions and inner voices rather than in the pages of His Word. We believe in the Bible, but we do not read it very much.
I’m in love with the bust of DAVID
This could well be my most prized antique store find EVER. I’ve had my eye on him for months. He was broken and poorly displayed with a raggedy-ole scarf tied around his neck, and with $20 still on the price tag. When my sister was here visiting last week, I had my daughter and my niece take it to the counter in two pieces—-hoping that the shock of carrying an unstable head to the counter would surely drive the price down. And it did.
I haven’t decided yet exactly what I’m going to do with him. He reminds me of my Stevie, strong and warrior-like and described as ‘a man after God’s own heart’. David is undoubtedly my favorite Bible hero. He was a man riddled with besetting sins but from whose lineage of repentance and restoration came the Christ child. His life inspires me to repentance. To enjoy the fullness of the freedom that comes only through faith in Christ. And if you haven’t heard the beautiful song Hallelujah, written by Jeff Buckley, about the life of David, you must listen.
I’ve looked online for new ‘busts of David’ but there’s something so applicable about having a David that needs love and restoration. Kind of reminds me of myself. Go here to listen to this beautiful song. Move the cursor to ~1.10 to bypass a long introduction.
Retro Cottage Kitchen is STILL at it……
Y’all have no idea how much fun this Retro Cottage Kitchen has been for me. First, just the fun of watching it all come together, then the fun of the big reveal and the linky party. I’m exhausted! But I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your kind words and encouragement. And those of you who joined Mr. Linky, I love all your projects and plan to feature of few of them later today or tomorrow!
White spray paint+green plants=Spring
First, let me start this little spring-y goodness with an introduction. Meet my new pool guy. He is a her. Her name is Emme, she’s eight years old and she is excited about her new job. Come July…..she will likely have quit or been fired. But for today, she vacuums like a champ.
And now through the delirium of the vast amounts of paint fumes I’ve inhaled, I give you ‘spray-painted spring’. Almost everything you see in the following pictures has been spray painted white. The check out lady at Lowe’s very surely suspects fowl play and may not be party to my antics if I try to purchase another can. But spring has sprung at my house. Come on in…..
