Notes from the Show

1. Gratitude is God’s gift to you—The key to gratitude is not in our giving thanks.  It is a gift from God that He first bestows on you in Baptism and continues to nurture in you through His word and the Lord’s Supper.  The word means undeserved favor, so even in the very meaning of the word, we see that this is not something we can do.  It is a gift from God that we can receive and in faith cultivate by partaking of His gifts.

2. Gratitude is intimately connected to suffering—Before Christ can offer the gift, the eucharisteo to us, He must suffer and die.  Suffering has always been inextricably intertwined in the life of believers.

3. Gratitude is trusting that what Christ has given is more than enough—The raw material of our lives  in unchangeable.  We can’t undo the fact that we’ve been hurt, that we’ve sinned, that we continue to sin.  We can’t go back.  The Lord gives His ultimate gift to us, Himself, in the Lord’s Supper, taken from the word Eucharist, which means literally true gift.  In the Eucharist, or the  eucharisteo, in Christ’s ultimate gift to us, He goes back for us, and make right all the mess of our past.

    Or, if my faith at my previous baptism was sufficient, that I will stop feeling condemnation. Just that I will see and believe his life is more beautiful than anything and have the humility to receive it.

      Kathryn,
      In baptism God comes to you and cleanses you of all your sins. They are buried in the grave with Christ and you can no longer be condemned by them. God does ALL the work for you-and even if your faith wasn’t sufficient it is God’s power, not yours, that saves you! Be at peace-you only have to believe that Jesus died for YOU! And He did!

    I enjoyed listening to your podcast and thought you had some great points. We all need more gratitude in our lives! One thing that came to mind while I was listening was that the sufferings that we all have in our lives are not exactly gifts from God in the sense that He sent them to us. Isn’t it that He allows Satan to act in the world and thus we all suffer either from our own sinfulness or the fallen nature of the world as a whole(i.e. natural disasters)? And God can then redeem the evil and bring about a greater good which is what we are then to be grateful for? Maybe this is what you said and I was distracted (I was making supper while listening…) but I just thought it was worth inquiring what you meant when you said that your past sufferings were a gift from God. Gosh, this got long and I wasn’t meaning to get into some sort of theological debate… Great series!

    Thanks for all your shared. I’ve listened to this 1 a couple of times- I’m still digesting and thinking- I wanted to comment on a couple of other things you shared: The new app! YAY! YAHOOO! Can’t wait 🙂
    Painting furniture/material: I never knew you could do this until I found Debi Beard. debisdesigndiarydotcom or you can look her up on youtube- there is a video called paint & distress your upholstered sofa- I was amazed! Looks fantastic!
    Can’t wait to see how yours comes out- I have two orange velvet tufted chairs I’d love to do but I don’t want to ruin them- I’ll see how yours turn out 🙂
