+I LOVE this photography, this story—the rawness and grit of my people.  I can’t wait for this book to be on my coffee table.

+This poetry?  So very beautiful and so very true as we think of passing the faith onto our kids.

+Also, apparently I missed a couple of great memoirs during the 90’s when I was in medical training.

Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt and All Over But the Shoutin by Rick Bragg.  Great books.  Better late than never. Two of my very favorite memoirs.

    Oh my, I love Rick Bragg and “All Over But The Shoutin”! The way he captures the emotion, the sense of place, that snapshot of a family…… And if you ever have the opportunity to hear him speak and read from it- do not pass it up! You will laugh, you will cry, your heart will break. And you will smile knowing how far he has come, all the while never really leaving that part of his life behind. We are all the sum of ALL our parts, after all, aren’t we.

    Rick Bragg and “All Over But the Shoutin!” is a winner. Read this many years ago recommended by my SIL. My people are from out West but so many similarities to the characters in his book.

    Edie, oh my gosh!!! Thanks so much for sharing the book about Appalachia. Reminds me of growing up in East Tennessee and in the hills of Kentucky and Wednesday night services that always began with testimonies. And yes, Appalachian folk do speak a special poetry when talking. Another book you might really enjoy is Wiley Cash’s “A Land More Kind than Home”. Run – don’t walk – to the bookstore for this one. It is worth it. Also, movies like “The Songcatcher” are so pure Appalachia right down to the bone.

    Absolutely LOVE Rick Bragg’s book. It literally changed my life. It is the book that calls to my heart and calls me to be a writer. So many tears were shed while reading that amazing memoir.

    I loved Angela’s Ashes too. It was so heartbreaking and riveting at the same time. It’s been years since I read it but I still remember the harsh details if his life. He also had a follow up book called Tis.
